activists turn heads on the streets of birmingham and newcastle
There was a great turn out for both of Amnesty's
October activist conferences, held over the consecutive weekends of Protect the
Human Week.
Over 200 activists came along to take part in workshops and hear from a selection of prominent speakers including
Helen Bamber OBE, founder of The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture
Richard Burden MP
Adrian Goldberg, former BBC1 Watchdog and Politics Show presenter,
Kevin Rowan, Regional Secretary, Northern TUC
Sara Mac Neice, Campaign Manager, Terrorism, Security and Human Rights
At lunch everyone changed into their Guantanamo style orange boiler suit and headed into the city centers to stage demonstrations calling for the US government to 'Close Guantanamo Bay'. There was a huge amount of public and press interest in both events, with theBirmingham group making it onto the ITV Central news.
A big thank you and well done to everyone who came along to make both weekends such a fantastic success. Pictures from both demonstrations can be found on the Unsubscribe facebook group.
